So You Think You're Going To Live Off The Land
Since I started prepping a couple of years ago I have read various articles and watched numerous videos on living off the land once the SHTF. I have to say that I think for the vast majority of people and preppers this is a flawed plan but one we may be forced to try just to survive. Here's why I say that. Currently there are 13.7 million people recognized as hunters. 99% of these people are recreational hunters. 10.1 million hunters will hunt deer and there are approximately 30 million deer in the U.S. Let's say there is some SHTF event and we lose 75% of our population. At some point there would be 75 million people relying on game animals for protein. Deer, Elk, Turkeys, Rabbits, and Squirrels would be hunted to extinction. People who don't already hunt or know how to hunt would probably die off first. People who live in city's would have to migrate to rural areas that by the time they get there would most likely already be under someone else's control so not only do you have to hunt, you have to keep from getting shot by someone who takes exception to the fact you are taking "their" food supply.
First things first.
You have to get out of your house or condo in the city and go to somewhere where there is actual game to be hunted. For many of you, this might be a trip of a few miles or one that involves hundreds of miles. Traveling by road will make you a target for anyone looking to stock up on stuff you might have with you. If you haven't bugged out within a day or two of the SHTF, the trip alone might just get you killed. If you have bugged out, where are you going to go? Do you think you're going to come across some abandoned farm that you can just take over and occupy? If you don't already have a rural home or vacation cabin, I must tell you that you're probably going to be banging on someone's door asking for help if you don't get shot first. Even people who live in cities and who have done their preps are going to have a hard time traveling. If you have ever watched The Walking Dead you would see the constant struggles that a small well armed group might face. I'm not talking about having to whack Zombies on a daily basis, I'm talking about the people you come across that are on edge and mistrusting of anyone and everyone. People who are starving and desperate and look upon you as a source of getting what they need to survive another day. You won't be getting proper sleep and will always be exhausted and hungry. Are you prepared for that scenario?
You got your deer, now what?
Let's say you made it to the promised land. You go out in the morning and are lucky enough to have shot a deer. Hopefully no one is close enough to hear a gun shot but let's say you brought it down with a bow. You triumphantly bring your prize back to the waiting starving family or small group. You clean, gut and cut. Do you have a way of preserving the meat or do you have to gorge yourself for a couple of days until the meat starts to spoil? Let's say you know how to preserve that 150 lbs. of meat. It might get your group through a couple of weeks and then you have to go out and do it all over again and compete against the other 75 million that are after the same prize as you. Eventually the game becomes less and less and it get's harder and harder to find. What's the better solution?
Raising your own animals.
Let's say you have a farm or rural property that you can raise some rabbits, cows, sheep, or goats. You've got it made right? Maybe, maybe not. You have a literal grocery store for other starving people who are in your area. Why go out and hunt a deer when you can sneak in and grab some rabbits or sheep. You will constantly be on the look out for poachers of your property. Good luck. I hate to say it but if you don't form an organized group of people and have the means to protect what's yours, you will find yourself in the same boat as the rest of the hungry hordes that have survived. No matter what, no matter how well prepared you think you are, if the SHTF you will find your life will be a never ending crapfest of problems that you will have to deal with and come up with solutions. Some people will survive and thrive. Most will not. Will you be one of them? I hope I am but there are no guarantees.
